“A ‘Lone Wolf’ thriller which begins in the trenches in the first world war. From the sale at Sotheby’s of the contents of the attic of Chatsworth House – with a label to the front paste-down to that effect. With a gift inscription from “”Rachel to Charlie”” dated 1918. Likely to have been Rachel and Charles Cavendish daughter and son of the 9th Duke of Cavendish. Charles died in 1944 of acute alcoholism and the books from the sale appear to be from his collection, often, though not in this case adorned with his critical comments on the endpapers.
